Indian Food @ Engineering Canteen

Hmmm looks like it is going to NUS Canteens food again. Quick lunch from the Indian stall at Engineering Canteen.

Fried drumstick over rice and curry gravy.
The sides: Eggs and onions, long beans and potato, brinjals.

A simple quick meal that is cheap, but somehow makes me satisfied. I wonder if metal trays makes the difference. (knock my head! silly boy!)

Vietnamese Grilled Pork Chop Noodles @ Business Canteen

This is only available on Wednesday at the Vietnamese Stall in the NUS Business Canteen.

I wanted to try this for some time, but never got to this canteen on a Wednesday. Last Wednesday, colleagues and I made a trip there and got to try it. The reason I wanted to try it is because the Vietnamese students seems to be always ordering it. Why? Why? Curious to find out why they like it so much?

It looks simple isn't it? It also looks kinda dry. But....

When you lift up the 'frills' on top, you see this deliciously grilled pork chop.
Looks normal, but somehow, the whatever marinate they use and makes these few pieces of grilled meat taste so delicious.

When you order they pour a scoop of 'liquid' over the dry noodles. This 'liquid' or sauce taste very addictive. Its a mix of fish sauce, lime juice and other ingredients that I can't really decipher at the moment. (Good excuse to eat it again).

The crisp lettuce, strings of carrots and cucumber slices make it very healthy and light. The cold noodles makes it quite appetizing as well. This is it all mixed up. After mixing, it does not taste dry at all.

Yup, the price is only $2.50. I should make a trip there again.

Colleagues and I are beating the inflation by eating cheaper food these few days. NUS Canteens seems like a good place to hunt for food this week. All the students have finished their exams and is staying away. :-)

Big Eater Restaurant @ Upper Changi Road

Last night, I went for another Makan Gathering. This group is a gathering of friends that has links with a little town called Batu Pahat. We usually think it's a small little town, but do you know that it's the second biggest town in Johor and its physical area is bigger than Singapore.

Yes, even the Singapore Musical "Beauty World" has a main character in the story that originates from Batu Pahat.

This makan gathering was decided over Facebook. Long story short, we decided that we will meet at Big Eater Restaurant. It was meeting of friends that we have not met for like 10 over years! (ya ya, the facebook thingy again.. ) We were laughing, chatting, eating and some drinking all the way from 8pm till nearly midnight!

So what did we eat? All the dishes were recommended by the restaurant based on their popularity. We were peeping around looking at other tables too. Ya, everyone seems to be eating almost the same yummy stuff. So here it is, the food that we had in order of appearance on our table.

Stir Fried French Beans. I am a big fan of french beans so anything french beans is yummy to me.

Next was the drunken prawns. Everyone loved the flavour of the rich soup. The soup was gone before all the prawns.

Next dish that posed for our cameras were the BBQ Pork Ribs. We were earlier been mesmerized by the aroma of it that came in a claypot from the next table. When ours arrived, hey! no claypot. We sulked for 1 minute then like little children, we forgot about it and devour our food as usual.

Next dish that came was the KL Style Hokkien mee. Hey, if you are a lard lover, this is the dish for you! Full of the crispies. (yeah you know what right?) Every spoon that I put in my mouth, there was the crunchy bits of it.

Have said it once and am saying it again, lard has no trans fat. LOL... But still eat in moderation ok?

The reason we came here was that we heard the crabs here was good. We had 6 persons and we had the dilemma of deciding, 1 big crab or 2 small crabs. What would you choose? We decided to have 2 smaller ones cooked in 2 different styles! So clever right? :-)

This is their famous Salted Egg crab. Yeah you can see the yoke of the salted egg above the shell. Sinful.... Yeah it was tasty, but I thought the next one was better.

The Black Peppered Crabs. We did a CSI on the sauce and found out that they use cili padi to make this dish extra spicy. So its a combi of pepper and cili padi that made it fiery.

Food in the company of friends always makes it enjoyable, especially when we all had a common link.

If you want to read a more detail description of each dish and what we think, hop on to Camemberu's blog. Yup, she was there too. I always enjoy reading her reviews.

Court hearing on defamation award adjourned

Channel NewsAsia - 28 minutes ago

SINGAPORE: The High Court hearing to assess damages claimed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew against an opposition political party, has been adjourned for two weeks.

PM Lee and MM Lee are taking the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and its leaders to task for defamation.

On Monday, the High Court adjourned the hearing to give SDP and its lawyers more time to prepare their arguments.

The outcome will now be known on 26 May.

The article at the centre of the defamation action appeared in the SDP publication "Demokrat" in April 2006 with the headline "Government’s role in the NKF scandal".

The court found that the article defamed PM Lee and MM Lee.

Both leaders successfully obtained a summary judgement against SDP chief Dr Chee Soon Juan, his sister Chee Siok Chin and the party.

After two years of court procedures, all that is left now is to assess the quantum of damages.

Both PM Lee and MM Lee were to have taken the stand from Monday to Wednesday.

But there was a turn of events on Monday. Lawyers for the Prime Minister and Minister Mentor said a major part of Monday’s hearing was centred on whether issues which were meant to be dealt in chambers should be heard in open court.

The SDP and its lawyers felt they were of matters of public interest and hence should be heard in open court.

But the judge finally decided that these matters could also be dealt with and heard in chambers.

The Chees also wanted Justice Belinda Ang to disqualify herself from hearing the case on the grounds that she had awarded the Lees a summary judgment in 2006 after the Chees had walked out of court.

But this was dismissed, with Justice Ang emphasising that it is her duty to hear all cases presented to her.

Also dismissed was an application to allow a representative from the Malaysian Bar Council to be admitted to observe the hearings in chambers.

Another point brought up on Monday was the affidavit known as "Evidence in Chief" filed by the SDP, its leaders and a former opposition election candidate Francis Seow.

Lawyers for the Singapore leaders want them to be struck off, arguing they are irrelevant to the hearings.

This matter will now come up for hearing in chambers on 22 May, four days before the court sits again to start proceedings to assess the damages claimed by PM Lee and MM Lee. — CNA/ir

Singapore foreign minister arrives in N. Korea

BEIJING, May 10 (Kyodo) - Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo and his party arrived in Pyongyang on Saturday, North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency reported.

The KCNA report, monitored in Beijing, gave no further details of Yeo's visit, but Singapore's Foreign Ministry said Friday that he would be making a five-day official visit to North Korea from Saturday, accompanied by a business delegation.

It marks the first official trip to North Korea by a Singapore Cabinet minister.

Singapore currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations and will host this year's annual gathering of foreign ministers from ASEAN and countries outside the region, including North Korea.

Yeo is expected to hold talks in Pyongyang with his North Korean counterpart Pak Ui Chun, who is expected to come to Singapore in July to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum, a multilateral security forum.

The two foreign ministers held bilateral talks last August in Manila on the sidelines of the annual ASEAN meetings.

Yeo is expected to reiterate Singapore's hope of seeing progress in the six-party talks on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

He has stressed in his public speeches that it is important to hold out hope to North Korea of rapid economic development once it changes policy.

Wanton Mee with extra Char Siew $3.50

I am beginning to see that there are really two broad groups of Wanton Mee fans. One group focuses just on the quality of the noodles. They don't really care if the Char Siew or Wanton is quite ordinary, they just go for the noodles and chilli. Damien belongs to this group.

The other group go for the overall package. The noodles must be good enough, but it has to come with tasty, juicy Wanton and a substantial Char Siew that is at least roasted with charcoal. I belong to this group.

OK with that background, you will understand more clearly what I am trying to tell you about this Wanton Mee that Damien recommended. This is apparently his number one favourite Wanton Mee stall and trust me, Damien has eaten at a lot of Wanton Mee stalls.

Well it is the kind of Wanton Mee that on first impression will elicit a "You mean I travelled all the way here to eat this?" kind of response. At $2.50 per plate it is undoubtedly cheap but the few slivers of Char Siew that looks as if it has been cut by a microtome look more like garnishing than a topping. But that's okay, with just a request to "Geh Liao" and $1 more, the noodles can be dressed with a bit more modesty.

The good thing about this Wanton Mee is the noodles which are really thin, translucent and flat rather than round in cross-section. I actually like mee kia (fine noodles) which is flat rather than round because I find that the bite is more lively. I think the flatness makes the noodles more curly compared to round noodles. Just like the difference between the hair on your head and the other major cluster of hair on your body. You all know of course that the hair on top is round and the one at the bottom is flat, right? I am only guessing about the noodles but the trivia about the hair is fact.......sorry, hope I didn't throw you off flat noodles forever.

The wantons here are a waste of calories. Full of wanton skin with very little mince, it really is very disappointing for such a well decorated stall. However, the Char Siew here is excellent. They still make their own with a Charcoal oven hidden in the corner of their tiny stall. Sweet and succulent with just enough of the crunchy burnt bits. The only problem is you have to ask them to pile in on in order to get some real satisfaction. 4/5

Conclusion

We were there in the afternoon, so the old man was not the one cooking. I was told that his braised pork is really good. So maybe in the mornings you might get a better plate of Wanton Mee. It was certainly one of the better Wanton Mees around and would please the group of people who just go for the noodles.

Vietnam Trip - Day 4 at the Vietnam War Memorial and Finale

We woke up early, checked out of the hostel and went out for our last day in Vietnam. Of all the places we visited, we left our the War Memorial in Saigon. So we decided to go there. Many would have viewed the memorial as a museum that is laidback. There was nothing special about how they set up and curate their exhibitions there. However, one thing to note about that place is that they do have very good photographs held in their exhibition area. Those photographs taken over the world pinpoints the fact that war is a cruel reminder to us all that we humans are very capable of destruction by every means.

A Plane at the Vietnam War Memorial

The U.S entered Vietnam with more sophisticated weapons of arms. In fact they carried out a usage of Chemical warfare using a chemical agent known as Agent Orange. Many vetarans of war from Vietnam, South Korea and the United States suffered post-war effect syndromes from the usage of Agent Orange. For the Vietnamese, it was an even more sore tragedy: millions of Vietnamese were affected either from health or mutated births. This can be considered as a genocide raised by the United State of America.

It took us like 2 hours to walk through the Museum. We took our time to read through the pictures. Although not much information can be found in English. We can depict how horrible the war for the Vietnamese. Still, the Memorial was not to remember the hatred against the U.S, but a reminder to us all what war can do to our world and the people who live in it. It also depicts the bravery and sheer hope of the Vietnamese, seeking to find their way out of a horror and building a country of what it is currently. And there is something interesting about all this: I hardly see any Vietnamese smoking and drinking at all. Or many I am comparing all of what I seen to a place I had been living in for the past 5 years.

We also flipped through a couple of books with messages written by visitors all over the world. We took out some which can be interesting for you blog readers to read:

“Unfortunately things like this are still happening. It is the cycle of life, War & Peace. I don’t think it will ever end. As an American, I’m sad to say that I’m not sorry for what happened. “Evil prevails when good men fail to act”. We had the best of intentions when we entered Vietnam. This is the “Fog of War”. Communism is an evil regime. We tried to stop it. Look at the Soviet Union under Stalin, Cuba under Castro, Cambodia udner Pol Pot. Did we make a mistake? Possibly.” - K.K 4.4.08

“I felt this Museum was a bit one sided, it showed outrosities done by the Americans but not from the Vietnamese, Was is Dreadful but there was bad autrosoties done by both sides.” - Christopher Delaine Smith, Australia.

Despite the fact that Vietnam has gone through all these, I am glad to see that at least in South Vietnam, the people are working hard to see that a better future is going to happen. Everyone works hard. Everyone smiles and they are very nice. Vietnam has left me with fond memories. And I also learn that M.A.G is trying hard to make Vietnam a better place to live in by removing all the land mines from the war zones. I hope to see Vietnam become stronger, like the will for change and the will that they have to live.

Starting a Party, and Hoping to Crash Singapore’s Parliament Again

An article spotted on The New York Times...

9d1cb221ee3dbe05ca57cc4677d97be7.jpgBy SETH MYDANS
Published: May 10, 2008
SINGAPORE

IT might seem late for a fresh start, but that is the story of J. B. Jeyaretnam’s life, a political intruder who refuses to stay away.

Last month he was back after six years of political banishment, the grand old man of political opposition ready to joust again with Singapore’s immovable political establishment.

“We are just beginning!” he exclaimed at a small news conference announcing the formation of a new party, the Reform Party.

It was an unusual phrase to hear from an 82-year-old man who has been running for office — when the courts would allow him — since 1971.

But Mr. Jeyaretnam seems unable to stop pushing, a man at the mercy of his own force of personality, certain of his principles, uninhibited and seemingly immune to intimidation.

He paid his way out of bankruptcy a year ago, after having been convicted in 2001 of defaming members of the ruling party; ordered to pay damages; barred from the practice of law; and expelled for the second time from Parliament.

He says he has lost count of the number of times he has been sued for defamation for his political statements.

“We in Singapore are denied the rights to speak up, to tell the government to change course,” he said at the news conference.

He widened his eyes and smiled a puckish smile, displaying three large, widely spaced teeth, and rededicated himself to the rescue of his nation.

“The most important thing,” he said, “is that what we have to bring about — and I’m saying it quite seriously — is the liberation of our people, the empowerment of our people.”

It seemed an outsize vision for this lone crusader at this late stage. He said 10 people had enrolled in his party; others had declined to step out into the cold light of open opposition.

But it is not so much his mission or his party that drew reporters, but the phenomenon of Mr. Jeyaretnam himself.

His persistence and his defeats are woven through Singapore’s history as a sort of counterpoint to its steady rise to affluence and economic success. In its 42 years, this city-state of 4.5 million people has built what its founder, former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, in a recent interview called “a first world oasis in a third world region.”

Most people accept restrictions on civil liberties and free speech as the price of their material well-being. Few people, even the discontents, call for fundamental change as Mr. Jeyaretnam does.

“We are quite narrow minded,” a 16-year-old high school student said, asking that her name not be used when talking about Mr. Jeyaretnam. “We think about getting a degree, getting a good job, that’s all. There aren’t any political discussions. It’s not really our culture. We just study and that’s it.”

WHATEVER his support, and whether or not he held a seat, Mr. Jeyaretnam has represented the idea of an opposition in a system that offers little role for one.

The perfect rojak of tackiness, candidness and, of course, bengness

Where else on duty can you drink a can of beer, mock about serious topics and sing your heart out to Frank Sinatra’s New York without anyone complaining (not that his perfect-pitched voice is anything to complain about)? Broadway Beng, or rather Sebastian Tan, is allowed to do so and more with his impeccable blend of Singlish, English and Hokkien.

Last Thursday at the National Library Drama Centre, I was torn between the uncertainty of focusing on Sebastian’s singing talent or his comical lyrics manipulated to suit the locals. In the end, I just settled with a vacuous mind and laughed till I tear (my friend was bawling at the end) and that is the absolute state to be to enjoy Sebastian’s Broadway Beng 3.

The opening act wasn’t carried out by him though. Instead a mini puppet version of Sebastian appeared on a small stage, meant only for his kind, with Beng’s trademark look: gaudy suit, blonde highlights and beng antics. And soon, we saw Sebastian appearing in his obiang-looking bright green boxers on stage and singlet, looking all shocked by the huge audience. He hurriedly rushed behind the drawn curtains and spout Hokkien vulgarities at the stage assistant for the ‘technical glitch’ before coming out again, this time fittingly dressed, to commence the show in proper manner.

Just so to add a Singaporean flavour to the script, Sebastian brought in local issues like Ah Meng’s death, the Mas Selamat escape and the saturation of ‘Tan’s among the Chinese Singaporean.

I was contented with everything except for some parts of the script that could have made do without the lame jokes that made me go “haha?” However, Sebastian masked them immediately by calling out and conversing with some members of the audience in a hilarious ah beng manner, mostly in Hokkien.

Oh, of course, the Hokkien dialect was a barrier that I had to cross with the trusty help of my friend. Also, once in a while, Sebastian clears up the confusion for the non-Hokkien speaking audience by either translating or showing through hand-sign language.

Broadway Beng was so unlike Sebastian Tan who appeared for the interview with Youth.SG in normal attire of t-shirt and jeans. But, one similarity was spotted: the sense of humour that defines Sebastian.

Audience warning: Broadway Beng will put you through an hour of laughter till your throat goes dry and eyes sore from tearing, but it was worth every second.

Broadway Beng 3 runs on May 13-15, 8pm at Drama Centre, National Library. Tickets are available from Sistic.

Vietnam Trip - Day 3 Finally ending and back to Saigon

The next destination was to a place called Fairy Stream if I remember it correctly. Our guides dropped us there and said they would be back in 30 minutes time, and urged us not to be late. Teng, by then is so moody she did not want to speak much with me.

I did not take any pictures of the Fairy stream, but we did try to go in there and take a looka looka. The thing was that when we walk in through this path, there were some local kids smoking off a beehive, remove honeycombs from it. I guess Teng actually freaked out somehow, and because the stream was the murky kind that is so brownish and all, she was not really enthuasiastic about walking in. Who knows what lurks in the stream.

So we went back the route we walked in, sat at a stone table and waited for our guides to come back. To pass the time, I went around to take some pictures. Of one, is a Honda Motorbike that I would have craved for 6 years ago. You might see it as a piece of scrap metal. But back then, there was a craze in me to make this piece of old metal into something really good looking. Good thing I didn’t, but sad thing was that I actually spend 2k on a Yamaha RXK which died on me eventually(PISTON JAMMED) because I forgot to lubricate it with 2T once when I left the army camp back home.

Vintage Honda I would have get my hands on 6 years back for a good riding experience.

Nothing special, but many interesting works can be done on this Vintage Bike.

A Jeep popular for touring around Mui Ne. 30USD for a private tour. Can seat 3-4 people.

Fish Sauce inside. That’s how they make fish sauce in Thailand and Vietnam I think. Pungeant smell I assure you.

Our guides came back 30 minutes later and took us back to Baotran Hostel. Teng quickly went back to the room and rest. As for me, I took a final swim at the beach, had a little sun tan, and went back to bath. Nudged Teng to wake up, and we packed our things for our Bus trip back to Saigon. Because there was ample time left, we lingered around the Hostel till the bus arrived at Singh Cafe. Took some final pictures of the place we stayed in. Good daylight for any photos to be taken!

Room that I would not pay a higher price for again. Anywhere is the same, you just need the beach and company that's all...

Anyone can lay there under a lazy afternoon sun. So no need to book sea side view rooms next time!

We left for Saigon, arrived there 5 hours later, checked in to the previous hostel we stayed in. Went out to walka walka a bit, had our dinner(just bread), and do some window shopping. It’s always raining there. Went back to watch some TV and slept out the night.

I Shall Introduce Myself

Hello all, this is Adibah! It’s a great change to be here, outside of an environment suffused with Lit texts, thoughts, and criticisms. Interests for me are centred by a (practically-) religious devotion to the arts in all its forms of manifestation – books, films, performances. I watch quite a number of documentaries and other programmes on the telly, most especially American Idol, I Shouldn’t Be Alive, The Apprentice – seemingly inane stuff, but nonetheless strangely satisfying. Pop culture appeals to me through its provocative aesthetics, a kind of balance to the heavy reading I’m used to. The experience of being submerged in its diversely coloured locale of mostly light-hearted, sometimes serious amusements is endlessly fun and productive (one way or the other!). On top of that, a large part of me survives and thrives on glorious, life-saving music: Progressive Rock/Metal/Trance, Ambience, New Age – I’m a fan of all kinds. If you don’t see me engaged in some important work, you’ll see me sneaking a pair of earphones up to my head where it rests rather snugly and relieved in aural enclaves. I write a fair bit as well, random missives that for the most part may or may not make sense even to myself after a couple of days. On the whole, I think I’m a rather amiable person – quiet, a lot of the time, but only because I tend to talk in my head than out loud in a manner that surprises many people apparently including myself, for, amidst intense cerebral chatter, I am easily inclined to believe that I’ve physically voiced something when actually I haven’t. You may find this queer and annoying – I can only apologise in advance for it! ☺

New Beijing Airport Exemplifies Why China Will Crush The Competition

New Beijing Airport Exemplifies Why China Will Crush The Competition (via)
The Beijing terminal cost $3.65 billion to build, which in China bought a structure bigger than all five terminals at Heathrow put together, for less than half the cost of the new Terminal 5. The project was conceived, designed, constructed, and opened in four years, whereas the Heathrow terminal, from conception to completion, took twenty years. (That building, by Richard Rogers, is a somewhat compromised version of his original design—far better than the rest of Heathrow, but much less interesting than Rogers meant it to be.) These widely divergent timetables are not a matter of Chinese efficiency versus British dallying: the British, like the Americans, pay the price of democracy. The Chinese government does not have to contend with environmentalists, financing problems, or recalcitrant airlines; the public hearings over the Heathrow terminal took the same amount of time as the entire construction of the Beijing one. China simply decrees what it will build, and floods the construction zone with migrant workers whose daily pay probably wouldn’t buy a British construction worker’s lunch.

Hyundai Getz 1.1: 'Getz' Better Than Ever?

The weirdly named Getz was presumably christened so that Hyundai could use the toe-curling line "As Good As It Getz" – advertising slogan.

According to "sources" Korean cars have had a similar effect as the craze with Korean dramas and manufacturers like Hyundai and its Kia subsidiary enjoy a firm grip on the entry level end of the market.

How true is that? Well... I own a Getz, and am quite please, in case you're wondering.

  • Vietnam Trip - Day 3 at the Fishing Village

    The Fishing Village

We arrived at our next destination at Mui Ne, the fishing Village. Actually, earlier in the morning I saw the fishing village. I wanted the guide to stop so that I can take some pictures, Fortunately, we went back to this place. I am really very glad! Look at those boats. They are very interesting and definitely very local looking to me.

Because I don’t have a good camera with me, I can only be contented with zooming. The images are always not as good when you zoom.

This is the BEST I can do with the zoom. Apparently, one of the fisherman might going “HELLO?” with his mobile phone. Amazing he’s not really scared that piece of gadget will drop into the water and go “IT’S YOUR MAMA”

Tend apparently is not enjoying the fishing village. Because of the large amount of catch daily, there’s a very distinctive smell to that place. You look how she smile you know something is very wrong with the air already.

Fisherman is repairing the unique boat the locals frequently use. Had to strengthen using cable ties look-alike strings. It is essential and a tiring job that they continue to repair, fix and strengthen this transportation which they depend on for a living by the seaside.

And throughout the place, you can see many of this Vietnamese ladies surrounded by all this sea clams or whatever they are. You look at the amount you already scared. Apparently, I love to eat all this kind of things. Unfortunately, with Teng and her Tummy Ache, all this have to go…

A lot of ladies doing the job I tell you…

Somehow, everything they catch, just go to the seabed. Any of fish they catch will just be sperated into the various kinds. You will seriously not feel they are appetizing with al those sand and gravel and flies mixed together before they are cleansed and ready for market.

The kooku pointing to the boat..

Before I left, I took this picture. Here I go again ZOOOM. Sad siah…

    Too many to count…

See, I told you already. The fish just flopped over at the sea bed. All kinds of fish. All look a mess…

This trip to the fisherman village is worth it. If I have more time, I would choose to interact with the locals, rather than just merely taking pictures. I would seriously prefer to rent a room at the seaside for a month, with the ability to cook if the place has a kitchen, come down and buy my own fish and food, and get adventurous with the cooking. But sadly, all this kind of so called LIVING may not happen soon, and might have to be really later in the future.

Thinking back after two weeks, I think I can still vaguely remember the smell of the fishing village. Not a friendly smell, but definitely something that will keep going through my senses when I think about Mui Ne and its fishing Village.

For those who prefers Blogging paid articles, to advertisements from banners either as CPM or per click revenue, there is new service in the market you can tap into: SnapBomb.

Snapbomb, your next Blog Buzz tool.

Just as the name of this new company indicated, jobs are snapped up quickly and audiences are Bombed as needed. Snapbomb works in a new targeted audience environment in which they have a tracking system created to keep track the blogs working with them as well collecting reliable data from the site. Bloggers can also keep track of blog traffic trends to understand how traffic flows for you.

Look at the information they collected from my site:

    Value: $10.05 to $40.20

    Search Engine Rank:

    3/10

    Alexa Rank: 7787096
    Technorati Rank: 1951828

It shows that although I might have a page rank of 3, however because of a low rank in Alexa and Technorati, some of the job offers I get are really seriously low in profit. Despite this, Snapbomb works in an interesting manner. As you write more posts for them, you will get better ratings. So, if you can produce quality work for them, you will get higher chance to receive better payment jobs. The base value for assignments basis earnings was collected from my site offers a range of $10-40USD. In which case, as time progresses and I can keep up with good quality wrtten posts for them, I will get what I should be profitting from.

What I like to see from snapbomb in the future, are more jobs and assignments which caters to my blog. I find an interesting thing that they can offer and which currently they do not have is an affiliate system. This will in the future prove to be a useful blog marketing technique or blog advertising tool. Let’s face it, many of us out there, despite the urge to work hard and improve one’s life, there is always a tier system need in which everyone benifits from each other. I would definitely look forward to the day Snapbomb does something like that out.

Whether you need a new buzz for your blog or for your business, Snapbomb currently works in a new trend for internet targeted audiences. I hope you will hear more of it soon. Hopefully this post grabs the interests you need to find out more about them! You can find out more about them through the link below:

    I Just Don't Like Children!

I have said it before and I will say it again, I do not like children. I don't hate them, but I sure don't have much affinity for them. But I do remember a candid moment when I remarked to a friend on how 'cute' a kid we saw on the street was, to which she immediately gave me a rather curt retort - haven't I said before that 'I didn't like kids?'

Sure I did, but it doesn't mean they can't be cute right? Puppies are cute too, and I don't see the need to have them either. But if I had to choose, puppies might just as well be more desirable alternative to babies - at least you can always rely on them for unconditional, non-judgemental love!

A lecturer of mine remarked on his website that 'the only good baby... is a working baby', which drew quite a vitriol from a classmate of mine, but funnily it was his strong reaction that was more appalling to me than my lecturer's view.

Him, like most people, perceives that having a child as a 'god given right' [1], for otherwise, nature wouldn't have given us the ability to procreate in the first place.

Yet, nature had also given us 'consciousness' of free will - humans are given the ability to make conscious choices that enables us to override our primitive desires, which if not the case, we will still have mating seasons, bright red bosoms, and and irresistible desire to copulate when it happens. Can't say I don't miss those good ol' days, since it is never less than difficult to read the right signals from women these days! But since we have evolved to make procreation a function of conscious choice rather than an involuntary reflex action, I don't see why an individual should not make his choice based on his own personal convictions.

Yet, the more interesting reason I have, is the fact that all life, will ultimately come to an end, where our destruction is a foregone conclusion. The only thing that's variable in our destruction, is just when on which timescale of that it will happen to us. And given that we are living in a world that resource scarcity is increasingly become a more tangible reality, true irresponsibility comes from the fact that we are bringing more life into this world than we can sustainably maintain, rather than not having children.

To frame it in context, it took humans millennias to reach the population of 1 billion people in the 18th century, and only a century later grow this figure by an additional 5 billion. There are plenty of detractors who refutes the Malthusian theory that such permanent exponential growth can be possible, and many citing that throughout the timeline when man has dwelled this Earth, it hasn't happened. But it is misleading, and misguided to reach the conclusion by measuring it on a timescale - the mistake is that we've gotten the timings wrong, not that the eventuality will not happen. Perhaps the recent increases in the prices in oil, gas, wheat, rice, corn, poultry and other food staples is just a testament where this eventuality may be much closer than we'll like to think.

But finally, from a more 'selfish' perspective, why shouldn't we not have children?

This, improbable as it may seem, somehow links us back to the reason why nature had given us the ability to have children in the first place. Perhaps the more interesting question we haven't been asking ourselves is 'why are we able to procreate in the first place?'

'It just is', is not good enough, even though many might think it's an adequate answer. If you are familiar with the works of Richard Dawkins, his book, 'The Selfish Gene' suggests that our need for progeny is simply the gene's mechanism to ensure the continuation of its existence. That twin double helix structure is the sole reason why we have the ability to bear offsprings, and why the need to make need, feel and want it.

And to come back to notion of 'cuteness' that I've alluded to earlier, surprisingly, it is just another example of the 'Selfish Gene' in action - a peculiar trait that serves no function other than eliciting a strong emotional response that is steeped deeply within our psyche - the 'cuteness' that we perceive, be it in a baby tiger or human, is intentional by design so that we will develop a sense of affection to the baby to take care of it. Yet it is irrational, for the case of a tiger, to grow affectionate to it presents a life threatening risk to oneself should it grow to full maturity - and yet the inherent cuteness is what inhibits our minds from perceiving the actual threat. Cuteness acts in same way in human babies, that when parenting have reached past its point of usefulness, the 'cuteness' trait subsides in a child as he grows into an adult, when he has reached self-sufficiency. It is not hard to infer then, that 'cuteness' is a form of emotional parasitism that confers the host no benefit in return in its raw, biological state.

But the good news is, since we humans are unlike the rest of the animal kingdom, we are able to choose between succumbing to our 'Selfish Gene', or my own 'Selfish Utilitarian Individualism'(TM), which is why I have chosen the latter. That all shouldn't be too surprising, given that I am supposed follower of Schopenhuer's school of thought, which just seems like the perfect natural thing to do! But the next time someone asks me on my view about children again, well, I'll tell them 'it's a looooong story'.

And maybe, they should just read my blog. ;-)

[1] 'god' as an abstract construct, given the idea to the right of childbirth is inherently present in all cultures and not just limited to people who believed in the Christian God!

Went for dinner with jaywalk last night. This Shabu Shabu joint actually had a turtle set meal. You have to wait 30 mins because they have to slaughter the turtle and cut it up nicely for you to cook it.

I didn’t have it (went for fish instead) but apparently turtle tastes like chicken.

Goddamn stupid reporters - and a persistent pain

(Meant to post this a gazillion years ago but didn't finish writing it...)

Thanks to blog readers for informing me about yesterday's a long time ago's tiny news coverage about me!!

Basically, the Fash Hag, an anonymous, often sarcastic writer (is she? I'm guessing from the two or so times she wrote about me... maybe she ain't sarcastic to everyone) thinks I should "live and let live" regarding the Bintan blog entry, and not have so cruelly (to some undeserving conglomerate?) wrote about about the resort.

To the Fash Hag, I think you have completely missed the point of my blog entry.

It is not to spitefully cause less sales for Angsana Resort, but to warn innocent travellers not to go to that particular place!

That, my dear, is an honourable and kindly reason, so instead of being reprimanded for it, I ought to be given a Good Citizen Award!!

If, my dear Fash Hag, you don't believe the things I wrote, there is only 1 simple solution.

Why don't YOU do some good in the world, and pay for your own holiday in Angsana?
(No, of course you can't tell them you are a reporter!!)

Then, afterwards, if you thoroughly enjoyed yourself and think that the pleasure far exceeds the amount you paid, then YOU can go ahead and write about your pleasant experience and therefore neutralize the horrid blog post I wrote.

If you had shit of a time there, then don't say I didn't warn you!!

What the hell is a Fash Hag anyway? I'm guessing it's inspired by the term Fag Hag - in which a girl who often hangs out with a gay boy is termed a "hag" only because it rhymes with "fag".

But hag doesn't rhyme with Fash (rather, makes it sound quite awkward) so your name is quite pointless. Do you hang out with Fash a lot?

    Anyway, enough of this!!

I just got my tongue pierced yesterday, and all of you who hate me, you'll be glad to know that I AM IN AGONYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

Food and I always had a long-standing, good relationship, in which I eat it, and it is happy to be eaten by me (latter self-assumed).

Now, due to the goddamn piercing, every single mouthful of swallowing is pure agony!!!

I can only eat 1 fusilli pasta at a time. CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT? CAN YOU?

It therefore takes me about 1 year to finish a bowl of pasta, and I AM STILL HUNGRY!!

    Super annoying!!

KK kept ostentatiously showing me her piercing and urging me to do it, expounding loudly,

"CONFIRM WILL BECOME SKINNY ONE!!! CONFIRM! I lost 5 kg!! And it's not painful la!! Confirm less painful than belly!!"

So grinning like a fool, I did it.

And it hurt (way more than my belly piercing for sure), is still hurting (now Day 3), and to my horror, I actually gained 1 kg!!

WHY WHY WHY HOW HOW HOW WHY???!!

THE WORLD IS SO FUCKING UNFAIR TO ME!!!!!!!!!!

WHY IS IT FAT PEOPLE GET FATTER AND SKINNY PEOPLE GET SKINNIER????

Anyway, the whole tongue piercing episode will be on clicknetwork soon. It's gonna include explicit questions asked to the piercer! Haha!!

    Meanwhile, new videos:

    XIAXUE'S GUIDE TO LIFE

I learn from an *ahem* expert how to write erotic poetry!! Are you can see from my facial expression, I was immensely bored by him. He and I were totally on two different frequencies and I imagine that when I am old, I'll peruse this video again and tell my grandsons that this is one of the most awkward and PR-ish moments I had in life.

Why? I don't know. I guess he is not serious enough for you to laugh at him, yet whatever he is not serious at is not funny????? It's not funny to listen to some guy's sexual fantasies and urges! God I hope I don't meet him ever again.

    CHICK VS DICK

    Wank-worthy material!

I suggested to Gillian that two of the Chick VS Dick eps should be about Paul doing something KK is good at, and then KK doing something Paul is good at!!

So it was decided that the two things are respectively pole-dancing and singing!!

This is the pole-dancing one, so whether you wanna wank to KK's gyrating (personally I almost couldn't watch it coz I'm her friend and it's like watching your mom dance sexually AHAHAHA), or Paul's slightly gay dance moves - go ahead and watch it!

    Ok bye for now!

It's DISGUSTING! I slept at 12am and woke up at 9am like a typical OL can! Please people, jio me for overnight MJ so I don't become like this!!!!

It might become permanent, then I'd start to shop at G2000 and wear Perlini's Silver!! OMG!!! And buy the LV Neverfull, book lunch tables with tissues, which I take out from my lunch pouch!! And I'll clik clak in my 2 inch Charles and Keith and get pregnant!! Omg... I totally want a baby...

    Quote of the day:

Kay Kay, after my piercing: "OMG! You totally cannot cannot eat noodles! Especially those curly kind like Maggi Mee!! It will curl around the ball bearing and you will DIE." (looks at me seriously, as if to say, "and you don't want that to be the way you go...")

    And the pain deepens........

Life gets really interesting when the price of rice rises 50% in 2 months. Inflation has now spread to food and the rise is astronomical. If you're a rice farmer in Thailand life is sweet, but if you're a construction worker in Philippines with 5 kids to feed, you'll be on the streets demanding Arroyo's resignation. It is estimated that oil producing countries will make US$1 trillion due to higher oil prices this year, they make money just by pumping this black liquid out of the ground while the rest of us have to work in factories and offices to survive. I know many of you "tak buleh tahan" the price increases. Unfortunately it is here to stay.....many of you would like to give all the credit to our great govt for all this, but I think they are only partially responsible. If you want to understand inflation and why you're so unhappy today....read on!
    .
In the past, economists used to think that inflation is correlated with employment. Employers who were able to raise prices are more willing to hire workers. It was Friedman who warned that this correlation might not hold and something known as stagflation (inflation + recession) can take hold and one can have both inflation & recession at the same time. Friedman argued that workers are not dumb, they will figure out prices are on the rise and demand higher wages thus discouraging employers from hiring more workers. Friedman was vindicated in the 70s when stagflation occurred and a recession occurred at the same time of great inflation. What occurred at that time was the wage/price spiral as workers demand higher pay to protect real incomes, that in turn leads to more inflation and the economy enters a vicious cycle. The back of inflation was broken when the US Fed under Paul Volcker broke the back of inflation by hiking interest rates to astronomical levels - my late grand mother used to tell me stories about how she got more than 10% interest on her savings account those days vs 1% today. ...while Volcker managed to kill off inflation, he caused a deep recession that saw unemployment rising to levels not seen since the Great Depression. At the same time, Ronald Regean became US President and introduced "Regeanomics" which was a policy of lower taxation, supply-side economics and a laissez-faire philosophy. One aspect of Regeanomics was to help employers to stand up against unions which were seen as a socialist corruption of capitalism - over time the power of the unions were broken....the same thing happened in UK under Magaret Thatcher. At the time people could see the problems caused by unions and their demands. The elimination of labor unions also broke the wage/inflation spiral....prices can rise but don't spiral out of control. The 80s/90s saw the triumph of capitalism over socialism,.....governments delivered high growth rates, low unemployment and low rates of inflation. The formula worked .....
    .
Over time without strong unions, the rights of workers started to erode. By the time we got to 2008, a record number of workers are on contract terms, companies have a hire/fire policy, pension schemes were a thing of the past, working hours increased, minimal retrenchment benefits etc. Singapore to attract investments had to follow the global trends otherwise companies will just move to cheaper places. What we see today is corporate profits is now at a historic highas a % of GDP (the implications I'll explain later). Our govt can claim the credit for happily embracing global trends. Isn't low wages, high profits great for businesses? ....Great if it is sustainable - remember workers are also the end consumers. Bear with me for a few more paragraphs and the big picture will be formed.
    .
Today we see in the US Presidential elections is a strong demand for change by Americans. Americans see themselves "short-changed" by "new" economy. Ordinary Americans now live from paycheck to paycheck. ...my point is this, the trouble we are seeing today is not just happening in Singapore but in all over the world. However, the income inequality in America is nowhere near what we are seeing in Singapore.
    .
The thing about unfettered capitalism is pressures tend to build up over time. Suppose you play poker with players slightly better than yourself every weekend. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but in the long term your losses start to mount because the others are better than you. You stop playing when you run out of money. To keep you in the game, the other players give you some of their money out of pity and because it wouldn't be fun to play without you or they offer to change the rules so that you won't be so disadvantaged.. ...however if they refuse to do that, the players will start dropping out of the system until there is no one left to play. Successful societies learn over time that it is destabilizing to run the system without some kind of social safety net or they empower the weakest members so that they have a voice because the longer you run the system the fewer winners you get. The whole idea behind the one man one vote system is to put in place a govt that runs the place to benefit as many people as possible.
    .
Here in Singapore, since welfare is a dirty word...what do you think people get when they go and see the MP? Maybe the MPs can provide some words of comfort. But seriously speaking, if you're qualified, the MP will refer you to the CDC to get some help or give you a few utilities vouchers so that you can keep your lights on for a few months and have water to bathe. The idea is to give you just enough to ease your pain so that you will not to join some guy who set up shop in Toa Payoh to criticise the govt. With inflation an increasing number of people are pushed towards poverty and they find themselves getting poorer working as if not harder than they did last year.

But what would the MP tell the person if he believes his plight is due to the govt policy of allow hundreds of thousands of imported workers? If he believes the system is unjust because he works full time and cannot afford to feed his family? Or if he believes the PAP govt formulates unbalanced economic policies that favors its numerous GLCs which are run by the power elites?
    .
For you to remain happy, you have to believe these answers:

    1. Foreign workers create jobs for you. Without them, you won't even have a job so the FT policy is a good one. Why no other countries import as many foreign workers as Singapore per capita? That is because their govts are no good, they are not as interested as the PAP in creating jobs for the people.

    2. The reason why many Singaporeans cannot afford to feed their families even when they work full time is because they have not upgraded their skills sufficiently to meet the needs of the economy. After a decade of skills upgrading, the number of workers who can't feed their families has increased significantly, so what is going on? Well, the needs of this economy appear to be changing faster than the workers can upgrade their skills.

    3. The GLCs (like SMRT, SingPower) need to increase their fees although they are making record profits and Singaporeans are feeling the pinch from inflation because they need higher profits to maintain their service quality. Incidentally the profits is so high for some of the GLCs which are monopolies like SingPower, they are able to takeover the Australian company Alinta for $7.4B....so some Singaporeans cannot afford to pay for their electricity but SingPower is able to make billion$ acquisitions overseas. This is something we can all be proud of because we have all struggled to contribute to the wealth of GLCs
    .
We have the highest income inequality among developed East Asian economies and the highest rate of inflation in 25 years. This combination means our MPs have longer queues than before during their "meet the MP" sessions. They can write letters for you and say a few words of comfort.

Must Read: The Holy Trinity of Blogging

I’ve recently gotten a new imaginary friend in the form of Blankanvas, who is professionally tasked with advancing social media in Singapore. We had a very interesting conversation online the other day in which she made me realize that my blog is actually a magazine.

The most crucial factor for your blog’s success which you should never belittle. With increasing competition from the endless ocean of media channels ranging from Television to Magazines to Blogs, how do you fight to capture one’s attention? With value. I visit Popagandhi’s blog because it feels like NatGeo locally cooked. I visit Cowboy Caleb and Mr. Miyagi’s blogs because their news is juicier than BBC. I don’t bother with that particular famous blogger who won’t stop talking about her hair and boyfriend, because I don’t understand what value I get from her at all. So, what are you offering your consumers in exchange for their time?

Perhaps she knew she touched a chord in me, and then went off to write a full blown guide to The Holy Trinity of Blogging - which you really need to read because it summarizes everything you need to know (or already knew but never realized) about blogging.

eastcoastlife is the Meanest Mom! - Weekend Snapshot #23

Dear Jaymes and all my wards,

Someday, you will be old enough to understand the logic that motivates me as a parent and your guardian.

I loved you enough . . . to ask where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home.

I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep.

I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your room, a job that should have taken 15 minutes.

I loved you enough to let you see anger, disappointment, and tears in my eyes. Children must learn that their parents aren't perfect.

I loved you enough to let you assume the responsibility for your actions even when the penalties were so harsh, they almost broke my heart.

But most of all, I loved you enough to say NO when I knew you would hate me for it. Those were the most difficult battles of all. I'm glad I won them, because in the end you won, too. And someday when your children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates parents, you will tell them.

My son and wards say I'm mean..... in fact I'm the meanest mother in the whole world! :)

When they become parents, they will know what's wrong with the world today.
It just doesn't have enough Mean Moms!

Happy Mother's Day to all Moms!!

The real winner in Lee's lawsuit will be Dr. Chee and Singapore. Not Lee Kuan Yew.

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

Lee Kuan Yew in suing Dr. Chee yet again is relying on the old Chinese wisdom of "Kill a chicken and frighten all the monkeys" to stay in power. And the chicken in this present drama is none other than Dr. Chee. The proverbial sacrificial lamb you could say.

With the Internet and the population getting more educated and informed, Lee can see his grip on power loosening. With more and more protesters, more and more open criticism, it is time for him perhaps to tug on the reins a little? Perhaps a defamation action now will send a message to everyone out there not to be smart Alecs. Watch what you say or do, or else you will become another bankrupt Dr. Chee.

Lee Kuan Yew this time is wrong to assume business will be as usual. This time, he cannot expect the dead chicken to have the same result on the monkeys.

With the unbearable inflation, with unbearable costs, with millionaires among paupers, with adults and children in dire poverty in their HDB flats, some thing has got to give. And that has to be their tolerance.

So far, they have been suffering in silence, but not much longer. If a man has nothing to lose, he will take desperate steps. Such as protesting until he and his children get what they deserve, when the ministers pay themselves millions.

As for Dr. Chee, he is not prepared to give in. That is bad news for Lee Kuan Yew. Whichever way you look at it, things have to change now.

This time, instead of the population silenced with this libel suit, it will instead embolden them. Singaporeans will demand their rights under the Constitution which includes the freedom to criticize without being sued and bankrupted.

In fact this law suit is gift to both Dr. Chee and Singapore. Singapore is one step nearer to being a democracy with this law suit, thanks to Lee and Son. Next thing you see is even more public dissatisfaction, civil disobedience, protests and eventual collapse of Lee Kuan Yew both physically and politically.

Lee finds himself in a quandry! What to do with the stubborn Dr. Chee Soon Juan and his SDP members?

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

On May 12, 13, and 14, 2008 Lee Kuan Yew and his son will embark yet again on their favorite practice to silence political dissent. On these dates, in the High Court, Dr. Chee and Chee Siok Chin will be told by Lee’s judge chosen for the dirty work; as to how many hundreds of thousand of dollars, they will have to pay the Lees in damages for defaming their character.

If any foreigner unaccustomed to the unique Singapore legal system were to ask why I am able to predict with so much confidence as to the amount of damages; they should be told that one thing is certain in Singapore. If the Lee family were ever to sue anyone; firstly, they are bound to win and secondly, the damages awarded will be in the tune of at least hundreds of thousands of dollars; no less. This much I guarantee.

But my question is this. Is all this punishment being meted out to his nemesis Dr. Chee producing the desired result? Since Lee's intention of using the courts to sue Dr. Chee is to silence him, is he in fact being silenced? Unfortunately for Lee Kuan Yew, the answer to this question so far has been in the negative. Dr. Chee is plain and simply refusing to be silenced. Not only that, with each defamation action defeat, his criticism of Lee, instead of mellowing and moderating, becomes instead more robust and even more critical.

Not just these politically motivated lawsuits before his complaint judges but every attempt at harassment by the Lees fails to silence Dr. Chee and company. You will recall in the past any attempt at public protest was stopped immediately, the protestors arrested, hauled before Lee’s courts and promptly punished. Now on the other hand the tables have turned. At the Tak Boleh Tahan protest on May 1, 2008, there were no less than 15 protestors (a revision from the earlier 10 that I had mentioned). Although in blatant violation of the public protest law requiring a permit for 5 or more protestors, not a single policeman was anywhere in sight, let alone any arrests.

Immediately after that, 2 days later, 7 protestors protested outside the SPH Building demanding more press freedom, holding a large banner to that effect. Again, surprisingly, not a single policeman or an arrest.

Dr. Chee had undergone a trial in the Subordinate Courts, Judge Jasvinder Kaur presided, for making a political speech without a permit. Although the trial was over a long time ago, the Judge has until today failed to deliver a verdict! Has she been advised by Lee Kuan Yew not to impose any sentence since it is clear that Dr. Chee will not pay the fine and go to jail and this defiance, yet again, will turn out to be an embarrassment?

We all know the vile character of common bullies. If you are afraid, they will bully you. If you stand up to them, they usually run away. Deep down they are in fact cowards.

Lee Kuan Yew shows the classic character of a common street bully. In the past in Singapore, his dirty tactics had always worked well for him. Each time he sued someone, the victim promptly apologized, paid up and was permanently silenced and removed from politics. You could say that his dirty tricks always paid off in the past. But not this time. Not with Dr. Chee and company.

Lee has crossed the path of someone with the tenacity and determination he did not expect. Dr. Chee is refusing to do what was expected of him, which is, once sued, to promptly roll over, apologize and prostrate at Lee's feet. With Dr. Chee not willing to do that but instead fight back with all his strength, Lee Kuan Yew has finally met his match. And having met his match, he does what every common street bully does. He runs away. As can be seen by his unusual inaction in the face of Dr. Chee and his street protestors blatantly violating his unjust laws.

So my message to Dr. Chee and Siok Chin is this. Singaporeans who understand these dirty tricks are clearly with you. You have their support. This is the time to ratchet up the resistance. This is the time to repeatedly show Lee that his illegal laws will not be respected.

I hope Dr. Chee will arrange for repeated protests from now until and through the dates of May 12, 13 and 14 2008 outside the High Court with placards reading "We want justice". With flyers distribution at every street corner everyday.

With the Internet used to full extent to increase awareness of the SDP activities. In other words, SDP pubic activism should be a non stop daily occurrence, challenging the Singapore Police to take action if they dare. SDP public activism should be before our faces everyday on the ground and displayed live on the Internet, daily. Without let up. Non stop defiance.

It is my reckoning that the police have given up on Dr. Chee and the SDP. Finally Dr. Chee and company have shown that truth is mightier than repression.

Dr. Chee should cast off now, to take advantage of the tide and the gentle wind comfortably blowing from starboard. Steady she goes! A tot of rum for helmsman!

  • Do SMU Fresh Grads Make Really Make $4k to $10k A Month?

According to the SMU employment survey, their salaries are 6.7% higher than the previous cohort.

Of the 618 survey respondents, 69 got high-paying jobs that pay between $4,000 to $10,000 a month.

And those who got distinctions in their degrees - namely summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude - receive an average starting pay of $3,500.
Congratulations to the SMU Class of 2007.

But the sceptics among us know that results of employment surveys are always to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Oh my… this piece of news that SMU Fresh grads get starting salaries ranging from SGD4-10k, at an average of SGD3.5k made me laugh quite a bit today.

2 years ago, I had no choice but to take on interns from SMU because there were none from NTU and NUS. I learned quite a few lessons. First of all, SMU interns cost more any other interns because SMU demands we pay more rather than for any other reason related to quality. Secondly, SMU interns are either younger (I got a pimply 18 year old) or from a foreign country (which I also got). Too make a long story short, YOUNG + IMMATURE + FOREIGN = DISASTER and I flunked both of them at the end of their internship.

So back to the results of this utterly bizarre survey. Will companies really pay 4-10k for fresh graduates? Despite the fact that they may be younger. Despite the fact that they may be foreigners?

    Perhaps.

However, any large company able to pay such salaries to fresh graduates would also possess a highly competent HR department with a proper HR policy. The questions below would surely be asked:

    1. Why are we paying so much more for a fresh graduate from SMU as compared to NTU and NUS? (Isn’t NTU and NUS more established compared to SMU?)
    2. If we hire a fresh graduate into position A at salary X, will the other current employees (with more experience and perhaps similar educational qualifications) in similar positions earn less or close to X ( In other words, you can’t pay a newbie more than what you’re currently paying your staff to do the same job because if word gets out, morale will go down and resignations will increase) ?

Also take into account how such salary surveys are performed. I would imagine that SMU calls their grads on the phone and asks them questions like “how long did it take you to find a job” and other pointless crap before finally popping “How much is your monthly salary”.

Perhaps being younger (and maybe more immature) these SMU grads may feel the pressure to inflate their salaries…. after all, no need to verify against their payslips right?

    Conclusion
So quick, everybody - make sure you go enroll into SMU now! After all, you want to earn more money right?

Singapore's Lee Hsien Loong In Court

    Singapore Democrats

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be the first of the plaintiffs' witnesses to take the stand when the hearing to assess damages begins on Monday.

He and his father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, are suing the Singapore Democrats for defamation over an article published in The New Democrat in 2006 comparing the running of NKF with the PAP's rule over the country.

But the PM is not expected to come to court until the afternoon. The morning will be put aside to hear an application that the Lees have taken to strike out the Affidavit Evidence-in-Chief (AEIC) of the defendants.

The AEICs lay out the case that the Lees have inflated their claims about their reputations by controlling the media, crushing any dissent, and manipulating elections. (Read full AEIC here.)

The defence have also provided evidence that the reputations of the plantiffs are not quite so sterling in communities not within the control of the PAP such as those living in other countries as well as on the Internet.

One such person is former solicitor-general Mr Francis Seow who has also filed an AEIC supporting the SDP's case.

Mr Seow states that he was detained by the Internal Security Department (ISD) on the orders of Mr Lee Kuan Yew. While under detention, he was threatened by ISD officers to not stand for elections as an opposition candidate.
